Ceramic tiles are available in virtually endless colours, styles, sizes, shapes and textures that will add a natural, rich beauty to any room in your home.
Glazed ceramic tiles are scratch, stain, water and fire resistant, and won’t fade from sunlight. A properly installed ceramic floor can out-last and out-perform almost every other kind of floor covering product.
With regular washing and vacuuming, your ceramic floor will remain beautiful for years to come. See our tile care and maintenance section for more details.
Ceramic tiles come to two basic constructions, glazed and unglazed. The body of ceramic tile (called: bisque) may be coated with a glaze or without depending on its intended purpose.
The glaze is made up of coloured glass and applied and baked to the surface of the bisque under very high temperatures. Glazed ceramic tiles are a great choice for bathrooms, kitchens, walls and countertops. Glazing helps make ceramic tiles resistant to stains, scratches, fire, sunlight and slips. If a tile does get scratched or chipped, the under-colour will show through and the tile may need to be replaced.
The colour of the bisque is the same all the way through the tile, so if a tile gets scratched or chipped it will not be as noticeable as with glazed tiles. Depending on the type of unglazed tile, you may need a special sealer.
Most types of tiles that are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired, are considered to be a part of the larger classification called “Ceramic Tiles”. These tiles can be split into two groups, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. These non-porcelain tiles are frequently referred to as ceramic tiles by themselves, separate from porcelain tiles.
“Ceramic” or non-porcelain tiles are generally made from red or white clay fired in a kiln. They are almost always finished with a durable glaze which carries the color and pattern. These tiles are used in both wall tile and floor tile applications, are softer and easier to cut than porcelain, and usually carry a PEI 0 to 3 rating.
Non-porcelain ceramic tiles are usually suitable for very light to moderate traffic, and generally have a relatively high water absorption rating making them less frost resistant. They are also more prone to wear and chipping than porcelain tiles.
Porcelain tile is a tile that is generally made by the dust pressed method from porcelain clay, which result in a tile that is dense, impervious, fine grained and smooth, with a sharply formed face. Porcelain tiles usually have a much lower water absorption rate (less than 0.5%) than non-porcelain tiles making them frost resistant or frost-proof.
Glazed porcelain tiles are much harder and more wear and damage resistant than non-porcelain ceramic tiles, making them suitable for any application, from light traffic to the heaviest residential and light commercial traffic.
Full body porcelain tiles carry the colour and pattern through the entire thickness of the tile making them virtually impervious to wear and are suitable for any application from residentia,l to the highest traffic commercial or industrial applications.
Porcelain tiles are available in matte, unglazed or a high polished finish.
Ceramic Tile is unparalleled in the floor covering industry in its durability. If the right product is chosen and maintained properly, it could easily last the lifetime of the home.
In general, ceramic tile is the most stain resistant building product in the world. Glazed tile, and even some unglazed tile, resists practically all solutions that could cause staining in other types of floor covering products.
The face of ceramic tile will not retain liquids, nor will it absorb smoke, fumes or odours. These properties provide for excellent hygiene.
Plain water or a damp mop is generally all that is required to keep the tile clean.
While no surface is scratch-proof, ceramic tile resists scratches, scuffs and indentations better than any other floor covering.
Ceramic tile will not fade due to sunlight or electrical light.
Cigarettes or fireplace sparks are no problem for ceramic tile.
Ceramic tile body is 100% natural.
