17 Jun The Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie

A few weeks ago, Lisa Spinks-Smith the development manager for the Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie, asked if a representative of Flooring By Design could attend the Shelter’s annual general meeting for 2014/2015 and be officially recognized for the charity work that we have done with them in the past and present. I must say, this event was truly humbling. Even though we have helped in the past there is always more that we can do. The team at Flooring By Design is always eager to lend a hand to this amazing organization.

The Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie, helps to shape the lives of so many women and children from our community. I would encourage anyone to assist with your time, or financial donations to this very worthwhile cause. Even though the Shelter has taken a moment to recognize Flooring By Design, we in turn wish to thank the dedicated people who make it all happen at the Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie. Thank You!

The entire staff at Flooring By Design appreciates all your hard work and dedication to our community!

Bonjour M. Kadlec

26 Feb What Do I Do If I Find Hardwood Floors Under My Carpet?

You’ve found hidden treasure! You’ve rolled back your carpet and found hardwood floors. Barrie’s flooring experts can help.

Please feel free to drop into our Barrie flooring store any time to ask questions about how to properly treat and maintain your hardwood floors.

In the meantime, here are some general tips to get you started:

Remove the adhesive
Your old carpet might have been held in place by a carpet adhesive. The type that they used will dictate how you get rid of it. A dark brown or tan adhesive is likely tar based, which means you can use a mineral spirit to get rid of it. Or, if it’s lighter in colour, it might be a general carpet adhesive, so an all-purpose adhesive remover will likely do the job.

In either case, you may be left with some unwanted spots or stains, so professional re-finishing may be required.

Remove the tacks or nails

Someone had the nerve to make holes in your hardwood floors with carpet tacks or nails. Oh well, let’s get them out of there.

Start in a corner of the room. Now lift and pull the carpet from the tack strip with a pair of pliers. Pull the carpet all along the walls. Once it’s free from the tack strip cut it into sections so you can handle it easily.

Now pull the carpet padding up. This will bring up some of the nails or tacks. The rest you will have to remove by hand with a pry-bar or pliers.

You will have to remove more nails and tacks when you take away the tack strip as well.

26 Feb Laminate Flooring Versus Hardwood Flooring

Are you weighing your options between hardwood and laminate flooring? Barrie’s homes are full of both, and each type has benefits and drawbacks.

Laminate floors are low-maintenance. If you have a busy household, you’ll appreciate no waxing, oiling or staining. You do need to sweep dust and sand particles, because they could scratch the decorative surface in high-traffic areas. At the same time, you need to wipe spills right away to prevent warping.

Whereas, hardwood is famously attractive, yet very simple to install in your home. The hardwood materials are kiln-dried, manufactured, installed and finished so they can last in homes for generations. The hard wood floors are tough, hard-wearing, and have long term durability.

They’re obviously pricier, but they’re definitely a good investment. Hardwood floors increase the value of your home. They actually look better and become better looking the more they age. That can’t be said for many other flooring types.

This makes hardwood a popular choice for people who are looking to sell or “flip” their home. There is a certain esteem that goes along with hardwood floors, which puts them front and centre in any real estate listing.

If you’re debating hardwood and laminate flooring, Barrie’s flooring experts can help. Please feel free to contact us any time.

26 Feb Kitchen Floors That Match And Merge With The Main Living Space

Perhaps the most fundamental shift in home design over the past 25 years has been the open concept kitchen.

In the past, kitchens were relegated to one, disconnected room, generally in the back of a home.

Now, kitchens open up into the main living space, walls are coming down, and flooring solutions need to match and merge.

“Lately we’ve seen a big focus on entertaining from our clients,” said Trevor Kadlec, President of one of Barrie’s leading flooring showrooms, Flooring By Design. “They’re looking for functional and comfortable spaces that maximize their ability to gather and relax with friends and family. Having a comfortable floor that looks great is part of that experience.”

And as more Barrie homes embrace this open concept, flooring designers are taking the next step by creating beautiful floors that can seamlessly blend into the kitchen, which can then blend seamlessly into the family room.

The solution is to use different materials such as the new lines of softer kitchen tiles and laminates, or using different flooring concepts entirely, such as warm, hardwood floors, or our latest 2014 line of ultra comfortable coloured cork floors.

All these new solutions lend themselves to revitalize the kitchen space, into a warm and cozy family and entertaining space rather than being totally practical and utilitarian.
